Javier Gomez runs away with season opener in Sydney

10/04/11 at 8:35 am

Spain’s Javier Gomez labeled his performance in the opening round of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series in Sydney as one of his toughest ever, as he fought back from a bike crash to claim an impressive victory.

A downpour of rain hit the course in the second lap of the elite men’s bike and from then on it almost became a survival of the fittest, particularly when Gomez went down on the bike.

But the reigning ITU World Champion got back on, rode the last 10 kilometres by himself and then proved his class even further when he managed to catch the leading pack.

It was then whether Gomez still had the legs to out-run Jonathan Brownlee, Alistair Brownlee, Sven Riederer, Brendan Sexton and David Hauss. For a time it looked like the Brownlee brothers would work together to get there, but Alistair came unstuck when he fell rounding a corner in the rain and dropped off the pace.

Jonathan Brownlee fought to match Gomez but he couldn’t as the two-time world champion broke away and finished with scintillating 30-minute, 9-second run. Brownlee ended up second, and Sven Riederer ran his way into third. But the afternoon really belonged to Gomez, and after showing his emotion with a fist-pump over the line, he said he wouldn’t forget the race easily.

“It was definitely one of the hardest ones,” Gomez said. “It doesn’t happen many times that you crash and then you get up again and catch the first group again and then be the fastest runner, I’m really proud. I will always remember this race.”

He also said it helped him to realise just how good his form was.

“I realised that I was fitter than I thought,” he said. “I thought maybe I should give up after the crash, the time (gap) was a bit far and I wasn’t sure if I would catch them or not and the rain and I realised I was really strong today.”

Overall, the British men’s team had a strong day with Jonathan Brownlee making the podium, Tim Don coming in sixth – 11 years after he competed in the Sydney Olympic Games Triathlon – and Will Clarke finishing ninth. Alistair Brownlee finished in 29th place, but if he hadn’t have fallen, the Brits would likely have had four men within the top ten.

Sexton backed up his impressive silver medal from Mooloolaba two weeks ago with a solid fourth place here, top for the home team.

Last year’s winner Bevan Docherty finished 18th, 2008 Olympic champion Jan Frodeno finished 45th, while 2011 Mooloolaba winner and last year’s world championship bronze medallist Brad Kahlefeldt did not finish.

CUADRO CARBONO FACT IS 11R

Specialized McLaren Venge aero road bike launched
By John Whitney in Woking, UK
The Specialized McLaren Venge was launched at McLaren's HQ in Woking, UK today

Specialized today unveiled the jewel in their road bike crown – the McLaren Venge. The bike is the result of a nine-month collaboration with Formula One racing giants McLaren. It'll be used in competition for the first time at Milan-San Remo this weekend by a select group of riders from Specialized-sponsored teams, including Mark Cavendish (HTC-Columbia).

BikeRadar were invited along to the top secret launch at the imposing McLaren Headquarters in Woking, UK to catch a first glimpse of the impressive machine. It'll be available in two models: the S-Works Venge will be available to buy in the UK from the end of April, but the model we were shown today – the McLaren Venge – is being held back until September.

Prices will be decribed in more detail later on, but in the UK the McLaren Venge will cost £5,000 for the frame module. US prices for the S-Works Venge are $3800 for the frame module, $8800 for a SRAM Red build and $9200 for a Shimano Dura-Ace build. US prices for the McLaren Venge are yet to be confirmed.

Over four-and-a-half years in the making, the Venge is the brainchild of Specialized's head of research and development Chris D'Aluisio. He was testing a modified Transition with drop bars in 2006 and was 'blown away' by the speed it offered. It was then he realised the potential in creating a road bike with all the properties of an aero bike. So they got to work on creating an aerodynamic frame.

McLaren had approached Specialized in March 2009 about a possible link-up between the companies. It was in July last year that Specialized took the prototype of the Venge to the carbon fibre experts of McLaren. Through their filter, the collaboration produced the model unveiled today, the McLaren Venge. D'Aluisio told BikeRadar he couldn't believe it when told of McLaren's approach, and was on the plane over to visit them the next week. "Sitting down with the McLaren team and seeing how passionate they are about racing and to hear about how much they love biking – that was pretty cool," he said.

He also revealed Specialized had approached a number of other teams before McLaren got in touch, but were put off by the idea of a simple branding exercise. "That's not McLaren," he said. "It's in their DNA to do high performance products. They do Formula One cars, they do road cars and I don't think they'd have taken on the project unless they really thought they could make a big change."

Specialized mclaren venge:

Key specifications

Claimed weight for the Venge frame is 950g, with the complete module (frame, fork, seatpost, crankset) tipping the scales at 2.07kg for the McLaren and 2.18kg for the S-Works. But of course, the focus with these bikes wasn't just on cutting weight.

Specialized have conducted track testing with the Venge against their current top-line race bike, the Tarmac SL3. Claimed watts saved by the Venge range from 3W at 20km/h to a whopping 23W at 45km/h, and presumably a lot more than this at Mark Cavendish's sprint speed of around 70km/h. Giving a professional rider that sort of advantage is incredible and should be apparent from very early on in the season.

Claimed torsional stiffness to weight ratio between the head tube and rear dropouts is high too: 80.4 (Nm/deg)/kg for the S-Works Venge and 89.7 for the McLaren Venge. To put that in context, Specialized say their 2010 S-Works Tarmac SL3 is 124.3 (Nm/deg)/kg (stiffer, but not an aero road bike) but the 2011 Felt AR1 aero bike is only 56.4 (Nm/deg)/kg.

Findlay claims 2011 World Championship Series opener in Sydney

Canadian Paula Findlay proved her 2010 form was no fluke when she outsprinted Barbara Riveros Diaz to win the first Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship series race for season 2011 in Sydney.

In a thrilling finish, a pack of six women that had the lead for more than half of the run leg were all in with a chance heading into the final lap. American veteran Laura Bennett had lead the way for most of the time alongside Findlay, Riveros Diaz, Andrea Hewitt, Carole Peon and Tomoko Sakimoto, but it was the 21-year old Canadian who had the final legs to carry away the opening round of 2011.

Findlay put the burners on for the final few hundred metres, enough to hold off Riveros Diaz from claiming her second Sydney title. The pint-sized Chilean star also won last year’s race. Hewitt came in for third, her second consecutive Sydney podium after she claimed silver last year.

The win confirmed Findlay as a bona fide triathlon star, after she won both the London and Kitzbuhel races in her first year on the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series. Findlay now has three series race titles, to put her just one behind reigning champion Emma Moffatt, who has a total of four race wins to lead the all-time series winners list. The scary thing for Findlay’s competitors is, there could only be more to come.

“I find it really helps my confidence because after I have a good race I am even more motivated to go even harder,” she said. “I’m excited to go home and do a few more months of training and I think that Madrid will be my next race and I am really looking forward to that.”

Findlay said she decided to play it safe in the big packs that dominated for most of the women’s bike. Australian Annabel Luxford tried to pull-away on the deceptively hilly Macquarie Street course, but was pulled back in as the top contenders hit T2 en masse.

“I just knew I had to chase hard and once I was there, I wasn’t trying to get the primes or anything,” Findlay said. “I was just trying to stay safe and stay up and stay within the group. After the run I felt pretty good and those last few laps went really well for me and those girls I was running with were so tough, I just wasn’t expecting at all to win.”

“There was so many surges and so many girls that were coming back from behind running on the hills that passed us, so many girls that are going to be factors later in the year and it’s still very early, but I think it just getting faster and faster and definitely very competitive.”

The highly favoured Australians in the field, Moffatt and Emma Snowsill, both had off-days. Reigning ITU world champion Moffatt was in the lead-pack until halfway through the run but dropped off while Snowsill had a tough swim leg and was chasing the lead pack from the start. Moffatt finished up in 13th place and Snowsill in 42nd.
